Awards and Special Mentions of the 13th Olympia International Film Festival

Pyrgos, 18 December 2010

 Jury’s Awards

Jury of the 13th Olympia International Film Festival: Sannette Naeyé (president), CineKid-The Netherlands, Simina Banulesku, student National University Theatre of Bucharest - Romania, Possidonio Cachappa, IndieJunior, director and scriptwriter - Portugal, Miomir Racjcevic, Media Education Centre, director - Serbia, Yiannis Kalatzopoulos, Greek Actors’ Association - Greece.

The international jury of the 13th Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People was pleased with the fine composed selection of films coming from all corners of the world, from New Zealand, China, Middle East and Latin America and from many European countries. The films addressed all age groups of young audiences and included different cultures and film traditions.

The festival succeeded to find original films with strong massages. This aim, to be a showcase of diversity - being equal and different alike as young human beings from different backgrounds and cultures- again was the focus of this year’s event. Giving children and young people a voice of their own was what we experienced in the many activities. Kids showing each other their own produced films, kids screening the international professional selection and kids everywhere in workshops, discussions and, most important of all from what we heard from themselves, having lots of fun and learning a lot.

We congratulate the festival with the tenth anniversary of Camera Zizanio, a unique event building bridges between so many teens from abroad.

The jury stresses the importance of the Olympia Festival special in times of economical recession as we have to empower young people to guide us in the future.

The jury enjoyed the discussions and the strong opinions of the individual jury members. Representing different generations and skills within the film industry, the jury reflected on the films from different angles and experiences. Nevertheless selecting the best films was done in a very harmonic way. Second best films are always interesting conversation pieces to analyze and to discuss. But best films are recognized immediately and cross borders.

Camera Zizanio travels around the world!

The Greek team at the International Meeting of Children and Youth Film Festivals and Video Workshops Makó - Agyagfalva

Although 2010 is a year of economical crisis, without any government assistance, theOlympia International Film Festival and the Camera Zizanio, turned to advantage their international contacts and were able to organize nine delegations to travel abroad from April to October.

At these trips, 18 children from Greece participated, mostly from the region of Ilia. For most of the youngsters, it was their first trip abroad and that has offered them the opportunity to live a unique experience. They had the chance to get educated at the creation of audiovisual works, to present their work to begin making international contacts.  To open a door in the world and the future.

Along these trips, we had the opportunity to present the work done in Greece – in the frames of our festival – to an international audience. And also to screen many films by children that have won an award in Camera Zizanio.

Finally, it should be mentioned that there were other invitations to attend festivals from abroad, but unfortunately couldn’t be realized due to lack of money.

Briefly the trips from April – October 2010:

  1. April, SERBIA, VRSAC. Participation at the BALKAN + FUTURE held in the city of VRSAC, in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, April 22 to 24, 2010. The artistic director of Camera Zizanio, Nikos Theodosiou, presented a tribute about the 10 years of Camera Zizanio. In parallel, youth films from Greece were screened, which participated in the Balkan Kids for Kids Festival. A Festival’s colleague, Nick Repoulios, run an animation workshop that was attended by refugee children from Croatia.
  2. May, SPAIN, Don Benito.  Participation of Nikos Theodosiou in the Student Film Festival in Extremadura (Certamen Audiovisual de Centros Educativos de Extremadura), where event Camera Zizanio and Olympia Festival were presented during a special event,  as well as films made by children from Greece. The Camera Zizanio’s delegation was the only foreign participation.
  3. May, GERMANY, Berlin.  Participation of a delegation to the International Youth Film Festival “Jugendmedienfestival” in Berlin 2010, which films from Greece were screened at the Competition section.  The delegation consisted of two youngsters.
  4. July, HUNGARY-ROMANIA (Transylvania). The participation of a large delegation, to a ten  days film workshop in the frames of the European Youth in Action program that was held in both countries. (International Meeting of Children and Youth Film Festivals and Video Workshops Makó – Agyagfalva, July 6 to 17, 2010). The Greek team consisted of 10 children and two chaperones.
  5. August, SERBIA. Participation at the International Film Workshop at Mount Tara, organized by the Media Education Center of Belgrade (International Youth Film Camp, July  30 to August 8, 2010). The workshop attended three youngsters from Greece.
  6. August, SERBIA, Belgrade. Participation of a Greek delegation at the 5thInternational Youth Media Summit, August, 11 to 20, 2010. The Greek delegation consisted of two youngsters and a chaperone.
  7. September, ITALY, Venice.  Participation of Zoe Chaita (university student at the Technological Institute and also a colleague of the Festival) as a member of the The 27 TIMES CINEMA Jury at the International Film Festival in Venice. The participation was ensured through the Europa Cinemas in which Youth Plan -that runs Cinema Filip in Athens- is a member.
  8. October, Iran, Hamadan. Participation of two youngsters from Greece,  as members of the Jury at the Hamedan Children Film Festival 2010 that will take place from 6 to October 12, 2010.
  9. October. AUSTRIA, Vienna. Nikos Theodosiou participation in the Media Literacy Award, during this, the possibilities of a further development of international cooperation will be discussed. A film from Greece, will take part at the Competition Section of the Media Literacy Award.

Also, there were many cases where  films from Greece participated in festivals such as Korea, Lebanon, Ireland, Brazil, Hungary etc, as our Festival initiative.

We are forgivably proud of being the only ones in Greece to have such a rich activity and to be the main representatives of our country, when it comes to the young audiovisual creation and education of the youngsters.

We want to warmly thank our friends and partners abroad who helped us to realize all of the trips:

YOUTH PLAN FIGHTS MISERY

May economical crisis has arrived and everyone says that there is no future for us, that we are standing in front of the perspective of the huge attack in our living standards and consequently we will face the shrank of the artistic- cultural creation, but we don’t stay impassive.
Culture is life and, through culture, we can pump optimism and open new ways of creation. We gather all of our means and forces to kick away misery and fatalism.
Youth Plan, the organization that mounts, the unique for their kind in Greece, Olympia International Film Festival for Children and Young People and the European Meeting of Young People’s Audiovisual Creation – Camera Zizanio, with our well- known sensibility regarding youth, organizes a counterattack of optimism at multiple levels.
In Greece:
- Pyrgo’s offices are converted into a club of creativity. Every second Thursday, new artists present their work and have fun with their friends in a night titled «We Spread or We Speed».
Supports, with its all, two new and important topical initiatives
- Α. “Cine- Mornings”, which substantially integrate in educational activity cinema for children, with screenings in Apollon’s theater at Pyrgos.
Β. The independent cinematographic and cultural team “CinephILIA”, which organizes screenings for the Technical Educational Institute of Pyrgos.
- The small distribution office of Youth Plan, in the frameworks of the conscious political support of Quality Greek Cinema, undertook the distribution of Vasilis Douros latest film “The mountain in Front”, a film about the fear of the unknown, racism and arrogance … And we will continue.
- Cine Philip, managed by Youth Plan, will hospitalize a 4- days Festival -organized by the creational team named “Tsiritsantsoules” regarding to their 10th anniversary- from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th of March.
- “Cinematographic Evenings at Cine Philip” continues with low price tickets offering quality films for children, parents and teachers, at the most crowed and abandoned area of Athens, Kipseli.
- We also promote the educational activity “Lessons in the dark”, which we organize in collaboration with the General Secretariat of Youth, including high quality film screenings, cinematographic workshops and seminars for children.
Next day’s program includes:
Α. On 26,27 and 28 of February at Koriso (Kastoria), during a three-day period, Youth Plan’s films will be presented: “Desmond and the Swamp Barbarian Trap”, by Magnus Carlsson, Sweden (animation, dubbed film), «Tahaan, a boy with a grenade” by Santosh Sivan and “Mr. Leonard and the travelling cinema» by N. Theodosiou (documentary with street cinematographers). Moreover, cinematographic workshops for high school and lyceum students will be realized.
Β. On 2nd of March in Aridaea, a seminar about the birth of cinema and cinema language will be realized, for high school and lyceum students, through screenings of rare films titled “From Mr. Edison’s miracles to Melie’s magic”. The same day, in the frameworks of Greek Documentary Week, organized by the theatrical team Pro- Thesi, N. Theodosiou’s film «Santa Barbara- Ghosts at Kerinia” will be shown.
Abroad:
Dimitris Spyrou, the artistic director of Olympia Film Festival:
- Travelled to Berlin, just to participate in ECFA’s - European Childrens Film Association- meeting, as he is a board member. There, the distribution of children’s and young people’s digital films was also discussed.
- Tries to transfer in the big screen the masterpiece of Menelaos Loudemis “A child counts the stars”, an international co-production, in which Greek Cinema Center unreasonably refused to participate.
Camera Zizanio, with Greek youth creations, travels:
- In April, at Belgrade where, in the frameworks of the Balkan Kids for Kids Festival, in two hours many films -created by Greek children and adolescents- will be presented.
- In May, at Spain where, in the frameworks of Youth Films Festival in the province of Extremadura, will present its work through films and speeches.
- The awarded films of 2009 will be shown in Larissa in the frameworks of the 2nd Artfools Video Festival.
- This year Camera Zizanio, unique event in Europe, celebrates its 10th anniversary and won’t let anything or anyone ruin this celebration.

It’s obvious that there is an economical cost in all of our activities. But, doing nothing means death.
We ask for the substantial financial support from government agencies.
We ask schools to organize screenings at Cine Philip with films from YOUTH PLAN’s rich film archive, with even lower cost.
We invite everyone to participate in the counterattack of optimism and cooperate with us.
